Lymington Rowing Club have made a successful start to the 2013 rowing season after picking up three victories at Ryde and Shanklin over the weekend.

Senior Chris Schreiber had the most successful weekend of all. He picked up two victories and two second places in the Senior Scull and Senior Pair. The Mens Junior Four also picked up a win and an extremely close second place.

Schreiber was joined on the start line for the Senior Sculls by fellow team mates Kenny Chalk and Geoffrey Fryer but got off to the best start. With the conditions forcing some scullers to capsize throughout the day, it took an impressive performance from Schreiber to scull into the lead.

Richard Hume of BTC pushed hard on the return leg but Schreiber had done enough and finished to take the first point of the championship.

Schreiber then teamed up with Fryer for the Senior Pair but they could only finish in second place despite a strong effort.

It wasn’t long until Lymington had more to shout about. It was the Junior Four crew of Club Captain Richard Wadsworth, Alex Barnes, Stuart Pink, Joe Bull and cox Tim Bull who pulled out a surprise victory. The team, minus Barnes, had finished no higher than third at the pre-season head races. What made the victory even more astonishing was that not only was Barnes returning as a late stand after nearly two years of non-competition but Pink was only racing his first championship race.

Wadsworth later teamed with Sam Ayles to pick up a second place in the Junior Pair.

Mike Leyland Jones renewed his efforts in the Junior scull despite missing much of the winter due to illness. The conditions demanded a lot but he was able to finish in third place, giving Lymington valuable aggregate points.

Lymington also had a new crew of Novice Ladies out in the rough. The young crew of Jodie Irvine, Chloe Boyd, Megan Skellan and Josie Bradford had a tough debut against older competitors but got off to a good start. The girls were right up in the lead group before a few large waves knocked them back.

They took back a few places through the turns and soon found themselves in a neck and neck battle with Newport. The debut crew dug deep and pushed through, beating the Isle of Wight crew by a length in a final dash to the line.

Lymington finished Ryde regatta in third place overall, but their fortunes looked to be changing for the worse come Shanklin on Sunday.

The Junior Four crew faced a huge challenge from Ryde in their final. The local crew pulled out a lead over Lymington but a good turn from cox Bull got the team back on level terms. The race came down to the wire but Lymington seemed to have the edge going into the last hundred yards. With victory within their grasps, a wave halted Lymington’s run of momentum and Ryde sneaked in to snatch the win by a canvas.

Schreiber pushed hard in his Senior Scull race but Hume was able to get his revenge. The BTC sculler held off a big push from Schreiber to level the championship at 1-1.

Neither Ryan Chalk in the Novice Scull, Mike Leyland Jones in the Junior Scull nor the Veteran Over 40’s could conjure up a win for Lymington. Tim Bull and Alan Taylor narrowly missed out on victory in the Double Sculls.

It was the team of Schreiber and Fryer who picked up the final win of the weekend. The duo won in dominant fashion and avenged their Ryde defeat to level the championship. Schreiber now has his foot in the door with two potential championships and Lymington as a whole will look to improve for next week’s sprint regatta at Ryde.

The Hampshire and Dorset Coastal Rowing season was scheduled to begin on the Dorset beach but high winds and cold conditions caused the race officials to cancel the days racing.

Clubs from across the Hants and Dorset region gathered near Bournemouth Pier early on Saturday morning to be greeted by a cold win and already choppy water. The Race officials, determined to get the first race of the season underway, waited patiently to see if there would be any improvement in the conditions.

The wind had other ideas. It slowly became stronger throughout the morning as the teams prepared themselves for the potential regatta.

After a brief meeting with each clubs captain’s and race coxswains, regatta control decided that the best course of action would be to send two senior race officials out to assess the course.

Lymington had a large contingent of competitors hoping to race. Mike Leyland Jones would have been up first in the Men’s Junior Scull. Lymington also had three entries in the Men’s Novice and Senior Sculls.

There were also entries for Lymington in the Men’s Senior Pair, Men’s Novice Four, Veteran over 40’s and 50’s and Men’s Junior Fours.

Ultimately the decision was made that the regatta would be scrapped. The race officials felt that cold temperatures off the water combined with low sea temperatures could be a potential problem for competitors.

This was focused specifically on the novice crews. Some rowers would be competing in their debut races and may not have practised a beach launch before.

This could cause potential chaos with freezing cold competitors struggling to get out onto the water.

Bournemouth and Westover Rowing Club will attempt to hold the regatta again despite having lost their water front rowing club last year.

The next race will be Ryde regatta on Saturday 11th May with Shanklin on May 12th.

Sponsorship for this years regatta Sat 1st June

This a plea to anyone with good contacts or a really nice boss! This year the regatta is due to take place on Saturday 1st June and we require your support. Although the club can supplement the regatta finances from entry fees and the sale of refreshments on the day, this does not cover all the costs.
